Don't trust Yandex Translate. It is your "enemy" here!

Let's be fair to Yandex Translate, because fairness is what separates us from people who smash the dislike button on perfectly good test just because they didn't understand it.

Yandex Translate is a wonderful invention! And it can help. Genuinely. It's a tool, and tools work — when there's a mind holding them. Used with your brain switched on, it will give you the meaning of a word, untangle a phrase, and get you out of a tight spot at 2 a.m. when the word "nevertheless" is staring at you.

Disclosure!!!

Disclosure!!!

Here's the disclosure:

  • Words — it translates right. Nearly always.
  • Phrases — it translates right. Almost always.
  • Big texts — it cannot translate without losing the meaning. This is not a bug. This is just what happens when a machine translates sentence by sentence without ever seeing the whole picture.
Let's imagine it's a dictionary.

Let's imagine it's a dictionary.

And that's the whole point of this post, wrapped up in one sentence: the translator is not the problem — trusting it blindly is. Use it as a dictionary. Let it hand you the words, and then you build the meaning.

One word.

One word.

And I can repeat!

You can use Yandex Translate. Just use it with your mind. Otherwise you're not reading the test — you're reading the robot's opinion of the test, and the robot has no opinion, only a dictionary. It is absolutely ridiculous!

So, let it go!

It is not that complicated!

It is not that complicated!

And one last thing. If you are reading this post right now through a translator, just know that you have understood nothing. Not the jokes, not the irony, not the point. The mirror has been held up to the mirror, and both of them are confused.

Learn English, come back and read it in English. You can do this!

I hope I made it sound easy.

Thank you for understanding.

Thank you for understanding.

P.S. If you're a native-speaker who has read this whole thing anyway, I told you it didn't concern you. But thanks for coming. I hope you enjoyed reading this pain.

Do you have emotions?6

The Never-Ending Chocolate Bar — IT WORKS
The Never-Ending Chocolate Bar — IT WORKS

Today I decided to try out a famous experiment! The idea is that we’ll get an infinite chocolate bar! I’ve never tested this before; even though it’s a well-known myth, I’m sure it’s a lie!

The Never-Ending Chocolate Bar — IT WORKS

The way I saw it, you first need to cut it like this...

The Never-Ending Chocolate Bar — IT WORKS

Then we'll cut it like this. And then we need to move these two pieces.

The Never-Ending Chocolate Bar — IT WORKS

Guys, this actually works! I couldn't even believe it—I don't get how? Alright, let me go through the whole cycle, and then we'll see how it turned out.

The Never-Ending Chocolate Bar — IT WORKS

This is what happened in a minute. I'll continue doing this for another 10.

The Never-Ending Chocolate Bar — IT WORKS

Guys, I'm really scared. What if the Israeli government notices this and kills me? I don't want to die! I'm going to hire bodyguards! Bye, everyone!!!

How to Start Watching Silent Films: A Comprehensive Guide

Silent films, which dominated the cinema from its inception until the late 1920s, offer a unique and captivating glimpse into the early days of filmmaking. They are not just historical artifacts but also a testament to the creativity and innovation of early filmmakers. If you’re new to silent films and wondering where to start, this guide will introduce you to the genres, key films, notable actors, and directors that defined this era.

Understanding Silent Films

Silent films are movies without synchronized recorded sound. Dialogue, emotion, and action are conveyed through title cards, gestures, facial expressions, and body language. The lack of sound might seem limiting, but it forced filmmakers to be more creative with visual storytelling, leading to the development of many techniques still used in filmmaking today.

Genres in Silent Films

Silent films spanned a wide range of genres, each with its own characteristics and masterpieces.

1. Comedy

Description: Comedy was one of the most popular genres in silent films. It often relied on physical humor and slapstick, making it accessible to audiences worldwide.

Key Films:

  • The Kid (1921) directed by Charlie Chaplin: A heartwarming tale of a young boy and a tramp who form an unlikely bond.
  • Safety Last! (1923) directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor: Known for its iconic rooftop chase scene, this film is a classic example of silent comedy.

Notable Actors: Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd.

2. Drama

Description: Silent dramas often explored serious themes and emotional depth, relying heavily on acting and storytelling to convey their messages.

Key Films:

  • The Immigrant (1917) directed by Charlie Chaplin: A poignant drama about the struggles of immigration, blending humor and pathos.
  • Metropolis (1927) directed by Fritz Lang: A groundbreaking science fiction film that explores themes of class struggle and industrialization.

Notable Actors: Lillian Gish, Lon Chaney, Greta Garbo.

Notable Directors

Silent films were home to some of the most innovative and visionary directors in cinema history. Their work not only defined the era but also laid the groundwork for future filmmaking techniques.

1. Charlie Chaplin

Notable Works: The Kid (1921), The Immigrant (1917), City Lights (1931)

Style: Known for his iconic Tramp character, Chaplin’s films blend humor, pathos, and social commentary, making them both entertaining and thought-provoking.

2. Buster Keaton

Notable Works: The General (1926), Sherlock, Jr. (1924), Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928)

Style: Keaton’s films are celebrated for their physical comedy and intricate visual gags, often showcasing his remarkable stunts and deadpan expression.

3. Fritz Lang

Notable Works: Metropolis (1927), Der müde Tod (1921), Die Nibelungen (1924)

Style: Lang’s films are known for their grand scale, complex narratives, and innovative use of special effects, particularly in the genres of science fiction and epic drama.

4. F.W. Murnau

Notable Works: Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror (1922), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)

Style: Murnau’s films are noted for their atmospheric storytelling, expressive cinematography, and pioneering use of lighting and shadow.

5. D.W. Griffith

Notable Works: Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916)

Style: Griffith is often credited with advancing the language of cinema through his use of narrative techniques, editing, and visual storytelling, though his work is also controversial due to its themes and portrayals.

Tips for Watching Silent Films

  1. Start with Short Films: Before diving into feature-length films, consider starting with shorter works to get a feel for the style and pacing of silent cinema.
  2. Pay Attention to Visuals: Since dialogue is absent, filmmakers relied heavily on visual storytelling. Pay close attention to facial expressions, body language, and the use of props and settings.
  3. Learn About the Context: Understanding the historical and cultural context of silent films can enhance your viewing experience. Research the time period, the filmmakers’ intentions, and the societal issues reflected in the films.
  4. Use Subtitles or Title Cards: While some silent films have been restored with intertitles (on-screen text that conveys dialogue or narration), others may require subtitles to fully understand the story. Make sure to use these tools to enhance your understanding.
  5. Watch with Others: Silent films can be a great shared experience. Watching with friends or family can enhance the enjoyment and provide different perspectives on the films.

Recommended Silent Films for Beginners

  1. The Kid (1921) directed by Charlie Chaplin: A heartwarming and humorous tale that showcases Chaplin’s talent for blending comedy and drama.
  2. Safety Last! (1923) directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor: Known for its thrilling rooftop chase scene, this film is a classic example of silent comedy.
  3. Metropolis (1927) directed by Fritz Lang: A groundbreaking science fiction film that explores themes of class struggle and industrialization.
  4. Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror (1922) directed by F.W. Murnau: An early and influential horror film that tells the story of a vampire.
  5. The Immigrant (1917) directed by Charlie Chaplin: A poignant drama about the struggles of immigration, blending humor and pathos.

Starting to explore silent films can be an enriching experience that deepens your appreciation for the art of filmmaking. By understanding the genres, key films, notable actors, and directors of the era, you can embark on a journey through the early days of cinema and discover the roots of many storytelling techniques used in films today.

Review of the Mascots 2024/2026

Foxina decided to release the posts again...  Everyone gets a Foxina's hug!

Frigs

Review of the Mascots 2024/2026

Appearance

When I saw these mascots for the first time in winter, I thought, "What the ****?!"

But it turned out to be an Easter egg for the French Revolution. It's a really subtle reference, not everyone will understand what kind of headdress it is.

Frigs

Frigs

The inattentive ones think, what's the difference between Frig Junior and the Older one, and I'll say: the Younger One has a prosthetic leg and red sneakers instead of one leg, and the Older One has white sneakers.

Oh, well, they also have different emblems - the Younger one has a Paralympic symbol on the emblem, and the Older one has an Olympic one.

Conclusions

The loot can be raised on two Friggies, because the bottom difference, Oh MY GOD, is in one leg!!!
Not bad, but they could have been more creative 7/10

And Tina, and Milo, and Flo

Review of the Mascots 2024/2026

That's a drawing, a style like Foxina's! We can't draw eyes, so there are black dots.

I don't know how to translate "Flo", but as I understand it, these are small flowers.

Flo

Flo

The fleets look like characters from a social block cartoon from the 60s, but not for 2026. Well, it's not 2026 now, suddenly, in 2026 it will be relevant.

Review of the Mascots 2024/2026

The fleeces look very cute here, obviously they were concept art, they immediately look like an animated series. Perhaps there will also be an animated series based on them, just like with Vinicius and Tom (in 2022 I watched series about these two, 32 episodes, they were drawn by the cartoon network!)

Tina is a white rodent, since I'm not a biologist, I have no idea what kind of animal it is. And do you know what makes Tina different from Milo? Right!

Milo has no leg again! Maybe they'll explain to the Olympics designers that Paralympians don't just have legs? They don't have hands, or eyesight, or much else.

Okay, well, Tina and Milo are really cute here.

Conclusion

They are cute. 10/10

Who's cooler? 1
