We all realize that games can not only entertain, but also teach us something. For example, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise, which often features real historical figures and highlights incidents from different eras, can be a good tool for teaching children who are interested in history. However, the educational potential of video games is not limited to this.
Each of us can learn something new for ourselves or change our outlook on life with the help of video game characters. Some of the virtual mentors are able to teach useful skills that will be needed in real life, while others are always inclined to share wise advice that is worth listening to.
This character is known primarily as the oldest witch from the School of the Wolf. Vesemir not only taught Geralt the basics of survival and martial arts, but also became something of a father figure to him.
He was always ready to listen to Geralt's problems and give him life advice when he needed it. Vesemir managed to teach even Ciri practically everything he knew himself. Despite his stern exterior, Vesemir had a heart of gold: he raised Ciri as his own granddaughter and made the ultimate sacrifice during the Battle of Caer Morhen.
The ancient dragon Parturnax, who dwells in the lands of Skyrim, is one of the greatest teachers in video games. He resides on the highest mountain (the ever-snowy Throat of the World) and is the leader of the Greybeards.
A long time ago, Parturnax was Alduin's right wing, but eventually changed his mind and sided with humanity. He often gives wise counsel to the Dragonborn, teaches the protagonist the Words of Power, and teaches him a number of important life lessons. In doing so, Parturnax also shares interesting facts about dragon customs and culture.
Up until the soft reboot of the franchise in 2018, Kratos was driven only by hatred coupled with blind rage. However, after the hero took revenge on the Greek gods, he managed to build a new family - this time already in the world of Scandinavian legends.
Throughout the game, Kratos tries his best to get closer to his son Atreus, although he does so with some difficulty. At times Kratos can seem overly harsh towards his son, but it is clear that he cares deeply for the boy. It is this love that drives the hero to teach Atreus how to survive in this cruel world. Interestingly, Atreus himself, in turn, teaches his father to be more patient and carin
Joel's journey as a father and mentor is at the heart of one of the most touching stories about foster children and parents. While at first he treated Ellie as a package to be delivered from point A to point B, by the end of the first game he had developed a warm paternal love for her.
In the first part of The Last of Us, Joel had to teach the girl basic survival skills - for example, how to behave in a fight or how to shoot a rifle. However, as they grew closer, Joel began teaching Ellie other, more down-to-earth things - for example, in The Last of Us, he taught her how to play the guitar. In turn, Ellie helped him become more open-minded again, as he had been before his daughter's death.
Perhaps one of the most famous treasure hunters is Victor Sullivan (aka Sully) from the Uncharted series. He takes young Nathan Drake into his care and raises him as his own son after Nate tries to steal the same treasure that Sully himself has already had his eye on.
Despite the fact that Sully has often done questionable things in the past, he shows great love and concern for Nathan. He teaches the boy to put his ego aside when making decisions. Apparently, all these lessons were not in vain, because Nathan managed to build a great career as a professional treasure hunter.
This character deserves to be included in this selection, if only for the reason that he single-handedly raises Eloi, who was considered an outcast by the rest of the Nora tribe.
Since Rust was an outcast himself, he taught Eloi how to properly control her emotions. For example, he prevented her from attacking a boy from the Nora tribe who was teasing her rather cruelly. He also imparted his skills as a skilled hunter and fighter to Eloi, so that she could rely only on herself in the future. During one of the skirmishes with his enemies, Rast sacrificed his life so that Eloi could escape.
