Who are the ENHYPEN?

ENHANCE is a popular fourth—generation South Korean boy band formed in 2020 by CJ ENM and HYBE (through their joint venture Belift Lab, which is now wholly owned by HYBE).

The band was created following the results of the large-scale survival show "I-LAND", where 23 trainees from all over the world competed for the right to debut. The show's finale took place on September 18, 2020, and the band's official debut was on November 30, 2020 with the mini—album BORDER: DAY ONE.

Meaning of the name: The band's name is formed from the hyphen symbol. Just as a hyphen connects different words to create new meanings, ENHANCE members "connect, discover each other, and grow together."

The name of the fandom is ENGENE. This word has a double meaning: firstly, fans are the "engine" that allows the band to grow and move forward. Secondly, it is a combination of "EN" and "GENE", which means that the band and the fans have a common DNA.

Band members

There are 7 participants in the group. The ENHANCE has no rigidly fixed official positions (except for the leader), as they are all considered all-rounders, but each has its own distinct strengths.

1. Jungwon — The Leader

• Real name: Yang Jung Won
• Role: Leader, vocalist, dancer.
• Features: Despite the fact that he is one of the youngest members (born in 2004), it was Jeongwon who was chosen as the leader due to his prudence, empathy and ability to unite the team. He has a very unique, recognizable timbre of voice and a sharp, precise dance technique. He took 1st place in the finale of the show "I-LAND".

2. Heeseung

• Real name: Lee Hee-seung
• Role: Main vocalist (unofficially), dancer, senior member.
• Features: Before the show, he trained with the TXT members and was considered one of the strongest trainees in HYBE. Hisung has outstanding vocal abilities (including absolute pitch) and often acts as the musical core of the band. He is a perfectionist who does an excellent job of any task.

3. Jay

• Real name: Park Jong Song / Jay Park (grew up in the USA)
• Role: Rapper, dancer, vocalist.
• Features: Jay is the main "mood creator" in the band. On the show, he became famous for his indomitable will and the phrase "Resentment, Anger, and Shame", which became a meme, but also showed his passion. He speaks excellent English and Japanese, enjoys fashion and cooking, and brings a powerful, charismatic energy to the band.

4. Jake

• Real name: Shim Jae-yoon / Jake Shim (grew up in Australia)
• Role: Rapper, vocalist.
• Features: Jake went from a beginner with minimal internship experience to a full-fledged artist right in front of the "I-LAND" audience. He is called an "icon of growth." He is known for his warm, friendly personality, excellent English pronunciation, and dedication to his fans.

5. Sunghoon

• Real name: Park Sung Hoon
• Role: Visual artist, dancer, vocalist.
• Features: Before becoming an idol, Seonghoon practiced figure skating professionally for 10 years and even won medals at international competitions. He left sports for the dream of becoming an artist. His dancing style is distinguished by the elegance and smoothness inherited from figure skating. He is considered one of the main visual artists of the 4th generation.

6. Sunoo

• Real name: Kim Sung Woo
• Role: Vocalist.
• Features: Sonu is the heart and soul of the band's concept. He has incredible facial expressions and is able to switch from a sweet and sunny image to a cold and gloomy one in a second. He has a bright, positive energy, but on stage he impresses with his professionalism. On the show, he was always the favorite of the audience votes.

7. Ni-ki

• Real name: Nishimura Riki (originally from Japan)
• Role: The main dancer, maknae (the youngest).
• Features: Born at the end of 2005. Ni-ki is a real dancing genius. He has been dancing since early childhood (he was once a backup dancer for SHINee). His ability to memorize choreography in minutes and incredible body control make him one of the best dancers in the entire K-pop industry.

Concept and Ent (Fictional Universe)

A distinctive feature of ENHANCE is their deep, cinematic and often dark concept. Most of their music videos and albums are related to the fictional universe of Dark Moon, which is also published as a webcomic.

• Vampire theme: The band often uses images of vampires. This is not just a classic horror movie, but a metaphor for growing up, the thirst for success, and the transformation from ordinary people into "idols" (creatures who live in the spotlight, but according to their own rules).
• Struggle and Temptation: Their story tells about seven guys with unusual abilities who face temptations, struggle with their dark nature and seek a connection with a mysterious girl (symbolizing fans).

Musical Evolution (Band Era)

The music of ENHANCE is very diverse: from alternative rock and synthpop to R&B and old-school hip-hop. Their discography is divided into thematic series.:

The BORDER series

• Albums: Day One, Carnival.
• Subject: Crossing the boundary between the life of an ordinary teenager and the life of an artist. The euphoria of a debut and the confusion of a new world.
• Hits: Given-Taken (a melancholic and mysterious debut), Drunk-Dazed (a powerful pop-rock anthem that brought them their first wins on music shows), Fever (a hypnotic R&B track that went viral).

The DIMENSION series

• Albums: Dilemma, Answer.
• Subject: Awareness of the complexities of popularity. Facing the rules of show business and trying to find your own way.
• Hits: Tamed-Dashed (bright pop-rock with summer sports vibe), Blessed-Cursed (hard hip-hop with rock elements of the 2000s).

The MANIFESTO Series

• Albums: Day 1.
• Subject matter: Teenage rebellion. Refusal to follow the rules of adults and the desire to draw your own future.
• Hits: Future Perfect (Pass the MIC) (Chicago drill — heavy, aggressive and confident).

The BLOOD series

• Albums: Dark Blood, Orange Blood.
• Theme: Return to the vampire lore, themes of fate, sacrifice and eternal love for his fans.
• Hits: Bite Me (minimalistic pop with very provocative and elegant pair choreography), Sweet Venom (funk-pop track in the style of Michael Jackson).

The ROMANCE Series

• Albums: Romance: Untold and subsequent releases.
• Subject matter: More personal, romantic and cinematic concepts showing their growing up and devotion.
• Hits: XO (Only If You Say Yes).

Achievements and Influence

• Sales record holders: They became millionaires (sold more than 1 million copies of one album) the fastest in the history of the 4th generation of K-pop at that time.
• Global Tours: ENHANCE has successfully conducted large-scale world tours (such as Manifesto and Fate), collecting stadiums in Asia and huge arenas in the USA.
• Worldwide popularity: Due to the fact that the band was multinational from the very beginning and communicated in different languages, they have a huge international fanbase (especially in Japan, the USA, the Philippines and Latin America). They have millions of listeners on Spotify and billions of views on YouTube.
